Clock changes and time differences
Tokyo does not change its clocks; the time is the same all year.
Good to know
- In November 2024 the TSE extended its close from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., the first change to its hours in 70 years, and added a closing auction at 3:25 p.m.
- The market breaks for lunch every day from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Japan has no daylight saving, so the gap to US and European markets changes twice a year with their clock changes.

What are Tokyo Stock Exchange trading hours?
The morning session runs 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Japan time, followed by a lunch break. The afternoon session runs 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., with the closing auction starting at 3:25 p.m.
Why does the TSE have a lunch break?
The midday break is a long-standing tradition on Asian exchanges. It once gave floor traders and clearing systems time to catch up; today it survives as two distinct sessions with their own opening auctions.
When is the Tokyo market open in US Eastern Time?
Tokyo's 9:00 a.m. open is 7:00 p.m. Eastern the previous evening in winter and 8:00 p.m. in summer, because Japan has no daylight saving. The conversion above shows the current times.
Is the TSE open on Japanese holidays?
No. The exchange closes on all Japanese national holidays, about 20 weekdays a year, plus the year-end break from December 31 through January 3. There are no half days.
